Alexander E. Athans
Attorney Alex Athans practices in the areas of copyright and trademark law, music law, contracts, and business entities. He also has experience in mediation. He is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire (B.A. Early American History, magna cum laude, 2004), Suffolk University (M.S., Political Science/International Relations, 2006) and New England Law | Boston (J.D., 2009), where he was a member of the Intellectual Property Law Association (IPLA), served as an executive technical editor on the New England Journal on Civil and Criminal Confinement, and participated in the Journal’s Confinement Outreach Program (COP), lecturing prisoners awaiting trial on various topics in criminal and constitutional law. He is licensed to practice in Massachusetts.
Alex has intellectual property experience from his time as a legal intern at Sedo.com, LLC, an Internet domain-name marketplace. At Sedo, he processed and resolved trademark and copyright disputes and wrote a memorandum supporting the registration of Sedo’s GreatDomains.com trademark in Canada. From working with entertainment attorney Patti Jones, he has experience incorporating nonprofit organizations, and calculated the artist and producer royalties for a major-label album.
Alex has a background in music, having been active in college orchestras and jazz ensembles, and rock bands in and around Boston. He recorded an album with producer Taylor Barefoot with his first band Kalta Eye, and was the original bassist for the Boston-based band The New Collisions. He continues to stay active as a musician.
